The next step for co-founder Giles Mitchell is exploring how that model works in a post-lockdown world \u2013 what does strategic mode look like?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Office Pantry launched delivery service <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/homepantry.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home Pantry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in mid-March. The idea came from a desire to keep staff working and the business running. As Giles explained, Office Pantry\u2019s customers were still there \u2013 they had just moved location.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delivery service was up and running in 24 hours and a website was built in less than a week. Like most businesses that have pivoted, Home Pantry serves the lockdown world perfectly. Now Giles needs to look to the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been operating Home Pantry in survival mode, rather than strategic mode. We just needed to have the business and the customers to keep as many of our team employed as possible. We need to have more of a strategic play about it going forward,\u201d Giles said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Utilise existing networks<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During lockdown, Home Pantry has proved that its delivery-based model is valuable. The store had 100 customers in its first 24 hours. But Giles knows how stiff the competition is in the food delivery market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s been an explosion of companies providing home delivery services for food. It\u2019s been phenomenal. It won\u2019t be sustainable for a lot of companies in the long run, particularly those that don\u2019t have a base of customers elsewhere,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Home Pantry to remain in the same food delivery space, it will need to compete with larger stores and supermarkets. However, since the company can\u2019t offer the same breadth of items, Giles is leaning towards delivering packages that are more \u201cexperiential\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of their most popular packages combines elements from both sides of the business: Office Pantry\u2019s network with Home Pantry\u2019s delivery model. Companies can order customised employee care packages that are delivered to staff working at home. Despite lockdown nearing its end, sales of the packages continue to grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Keep track of customer demographics<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_447\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-447\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-447\" src=\"http:\/\/archive.bethebusiness.com\/rebuild-your-business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Giles-Mitchell.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.bethebusiness.com\/rebuild-your-business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Giles-Mitchell.jpg 512w, https:\/\/archive.bethebusiness.com\/rebuild-your-business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Giles-Mitchell-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-447\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Giles Mitchell has used the lockdown to develop a number of new products<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest challenge at the moment is identifying which customers will be buying from the business in six or 12 months\u2019 time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home Pantry\u2019s first customers varied from people who couldn\u2019t buy vegetables locally to people who knew Office Pantry and wanted to get the same food at home. Three months later, it\u2019s almost impossible to pinpoint a definitive target market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe range of customers you end up speaking to at the moment is so diverse. We\u2019re delivering essentials to people in the most vulnerable bracket of society, where we\u2019re trying to calculate the exact amount of protein they need each week. The next moment we\u2019re delivering to someone at a tech firm who just wants great healthy food and a Sudoku book in their package,\u201d Giles explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Let staff run with new ideas<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giles compares the current business environment to the Wild West. No one knows what they\u2019re doing or what the right or wrong thing to do is. He\u2019s using the time to think about how the business could innovate and encouraging staff to run with ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce you get into that \u2018what\u2019s next?\u2019 phase, that\u2019s when your adrenaline gets going. It\u2019s like you have a blank piece of paper and you can just create. It\u2019s been really fun for our team because we\u2019re letting them run as much as possible. Any idea could be a really great one at the moment,\u201d Giles said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got a couple of other ventures that we\u2019ve started in the last few months that are complementary to our space.
